App available in Apple iTunes and Google Play stores.
"The Boomerang bike unit is awesome. The unit stays charged at least for days. I am tech challenged, but had no issue installing and using app which has stupidly and mercifully simple interface." – Darren S. on Google Play
There is a lot to unpack with this product, so I'll try to be brief. When it comes to quality, it's rather simple: This is a very sturdy piece of equipment that does not feel cheap. The screw that attaches it to your bike requires a unique bit, which is an added level of security since it's not going to be lying around in your toolbox already. This does not include the app that integrates with the product--that gets a 1 out of 10 rating. The app is supposed to let you view your cycling statistics as measured by the device. However, the `Trips` section causes the app to force close. The summary never shows the correct battery level, so that's useless. It takes several -minutes- for the `ARM` and `DISARM` actions to complete, once it took over 5 minutes and several app restarts to get the device to disengage. When we reached out to the company to report the less-than-stellar performance of the app, we were advised that "a direly needed update is coming next week to address those problems and enable the Bluetooth capability." Three weeks later, no such update has occurred. The web interface is a bit more accurate, and will display trips correctly--for the most part. My trip dashboard starts recording about 3 blocks after I start my ride--I assume this is the delay in how long it takes the device to get a GPS signal here in Silicon Valley--and on the return trip, the tracking stops as soon as I enter my building. This is to be expected. However, it takes until the next day for the tracker to realize I am done with my ride and to give any data on it.
The signal strength is also extremely lackluster. I live in an apartment with an outside-facing window. My cycle is parked about 15 feet from this window. These trackers are supposed to have a SIM card in them, which we pay an annual subscription to take advantage of. Unfortunately, my device has no signal while it's in my apartment, and only gets signal once it is back in the open. This means, if it's stolen, just take it inside and it cannot be tracked!
The charging is another pain-point. As I explained above, the screws that are used to fasten the device to your bicycle is a unique and special torque screw. and it chews at the rubberized strip at the top (only where the screw touches it.. it's not too bad). Now when it comes time to charge (roughly every other day, not 30+ days as advertised!!) you must unscrew it from the bike, then connect it to the USB charger so it can charge. This is insanely inconvenient since we don't plan to keep our bikes in our domicile in the long-term. If you keep you bike in a storage closet, shed, etc. You'll need to make sure you have an electrical outlet just a few feet from your bike so you can charge the tracker.
When it comes to the alarm, it's a very short lived series of beeps. I think maybe 5 or 6 beeps, then it stops for a few minutes before beeping again. It's not jarring at all, or does it sound for near long enough (in my opinion) to really grab attention.
In summary, this is a device I can recommend if you're looking for a deterrent with potential for future advancement. I would caution that the app has been out since 2008 and has not been updated, so don't hold your breath on getting any updates soon that makes the unit usable in any major capacity. Their blog was last updated in 2018, and their "About Us" page just says one sentence and includes a "Buy Now" call-to-action button.
Would I recommend this? Yes. When paired with a high-grade lock, the pair would make the bike discouraging to any thief.
Product Enhancement Suggestion:
1. Fix The App - In today's age, there's no excuse
2. Increase the Decible of the alarm, or the duration and frequency of alarms
3. Enable the bluetooth
4. Enhancement: If bluetooth connection to phone is lost, a setting could be created to auto-arm the device.
@Boomerang: I would love to give a more in-depth report, R&D style, of my time with the device if you're open to it. I think this has incredible potential, but it's definitely been slow-going.
I have found there is a 1 to 5 minuet activation over the 3g network. About 20% of the time, the device is lost. I have even deactivated the device over the network and had it turn back on. The app thinking it was deactivated, while the boomerang thinking it was active.
A Bluetooth connection would be better.
Received the unit very quickly and I'm impressed with the design. Has a nice feel and bolts to my e-bike frame quite securely with high security screws. Very easy to deal with company and quick to reply to any of my questions. Have not had to recharge it yet, but it will get charged when I have to charge up my e-bike. If you are looking for the best security device for your bike (above and beyond a good lock!), this little gadget is the thing.
Got this in a couple of weeks ago, installation was easy, setup requires that you buy the cell subscription first and send in the info and took a day to get me in the system, that was a little cumbersome.
The unit seems ok, it tracks and the alarm works. My main problems are that it is slow to respond, I often and riding off with my alarm sounding before it recognizes I disarmed it. Also after a full battery drain it woke up on alarm and I took a ride with my bike alarming every so often. It’s a good idea that needs refining.
The analytics of my ride often break it up into several small rides because of stops at signs or lights. This isn’t a huge deal for me because I don’t need it for those features, just security. All in all this device seems to fit the build for what I need it for, just has some loose ends that need to be fixed.
After doing months of follow-up and no response from the suppler - I’m now being aske to provide a review for sometihng I’ve yet to receive. VERY DISASTISFIED with the responsiveness and STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED something I paid for months ago.
